The California State Speech and Debate Championship took place the weekend of April 20-22. Homestead High School student Michelle Ho is the state championship in Original Advocacy, an original persuasive speech which defines a problem and proposes a legislative solution. Michelle, a senior, is not new to winning. She was state champion in her sophomore year and took second in her junior year. From Lynbrook High School, Patrick Diehl ranked in the top eight Lincoln-Douglas debaters in the state. Monta Vista senior and student member of the Board of Trustees Peter Lu is ranked 5th in the state in impromptu speaking. Congratulations to all these students, their coaches and teams for the hard work, dedication, and commitment that it takes to succeed in speech and debate at local, state and national levels of competition.
Recently, various Lions Clubs in the Bay Area hosted student speaker competitions. Students created orations on the topic: “Global Warming: Fact or Fiction?”Janhavi Athavale won the club and zone levels and continued on to win the district level competition earning a $4,500 scholarship. Janhavi is also the first student from Monta Vista in 10 years to qualify in the California Coast National Forensic League district to compete in the National Championships. This is a week-long tournament and will be held in June in Wichita, Kansas. Janhavi is competing in oratory, an event in which the student writes her own persuasive speech of approximately 10 minutes. Janhavi’s speech, entitled “Take Your Criticism Like a Man, or a Woman For That Matter,” persuades that we should learn to use criticism to our benefit.
Junior Janhavi Athavale and Sophomore Amogh Havanur recently won the District 20 Optimist Oratorical Contest. The theme was "My Biggest Challenge is..." and each student received a $1,500 scholarship.
