Carl Dunn is off to the races...
The Board of Trustees and Superintendent Polly Bove recognized retiring Coordinator of Facilities and Maintenance Operations Carl Dunn. For the past 19 years, Dunn has played a key role in the smooth operation of the meetings from setting up the microphones and recording system to coordinating everything when the meetings were held at each high school during the year. |
| Dunn stated that he has attended over 320 Board meetings and has missed only seven (noting he did enjoy most of the meetings). Trustee Homer Tong thanked Carl for the professionalism of his work and for always looking for ways to save the District money in the projects he managed. Trustee Barbara Nunes stated that when she was principal of Cupertino High School, Carl was always very responsive to the needs of school sites. Board President Nancy Newton remembered the big earthquake in 1989 when the Board was holding a study session and everyone climbed under the tables. She shared that Carl Dunn stayed at the District for three days — over 72 hours straight — to make sure that everything was safe for operations, at a time when he had major damage from the earthquake at his own home. Maintenance Secretary Judy Stahmer warmly remembers, “WOW, it’s been a great 17 years working with Carl. His knowledge, fairness and humor have made it a pleasure working with him. He will truly be missed by the Maintenance Department.” |
| In retirement, Carl will be spending much of his time waving the flag as a turn worker at the Infineon Raceway in Sonoma. At the early age of 10, Carl’s uncle took him to the midget races and he was hooked on racing. He drag raced (picture Carl as “Danny in Grease”) his 50 Olds in the early 60’s, built five different cars in the 70’s, and took 10 first place finishes in off-road dune buggy type races in the early 80’s. Happy Retirement & Happy Racing Carl! |

STUDY SESSION
2007-2008 First Interim Budget Report: Chief Business Officer/Associate Superintendent Geoffrey Kiehl reported that the State budget forecast looks grim with large operating shortfalls projected for the next few years. He stated the District should see a modest 7.5% property tax growth, although the volume of transactions is down 40% in Santa Clara County. Strategic Business and Community Manager Glenn Evans reported that District staff is analyzing the possibility of a future bond measure and/or renewal of the parcel tax. He reported that staff will make a recommendation to the Board in late January or early February 2008.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
Board President Nancy Newton gave Superintendent Bove chocolate suckers with each Trustee’s face on the front that they had made at the California School Boards Association Conference — as a “thank you for a great year.” • Glenn Evans reported that good progress is being made in researching the use of solar power to reduce costs for energy and as an environmentally friendly energy source. The District is looking at a power purchase agreement model. • Associate Superintendent Paul Cheng reviewed the process taken districtwide to carefully examine academic honesty policies of all five District high schools. The goal is to create a single academic honesty policy to be used at all five high schools that will be implemented in fall 2008. • Paul Cheng updated the Board on his meetings with Mark Weiss, Education Director at Operation Respect. The mission of Operation Respect, founded by Peter Yarrow of the folk group Peter, Paul & Mary, is “to assure each child and youth a respectful, safe and compassionate climate of learning where their academic, social and emotional development can take place free of bullying, ridicule and violence.” Last week Weiss visited various programs in the District and met with Superintendent Bove, Deputy Superintendent Kate Jamentz, and Cheng. They discussed the new guidance commitments being developed districtwide and how they relate to what Operation Respect does. Plans are in the works for an event in August to kickoff the District’s commitment to students and families to provide the information and services they need to make good decisions for success in high school and beyond. Peter Yarrow is scheduled to speak and perform at the August event. • Coordinator of Educational Options Alison Coy announced a name change for College Advantage. Beginning with next year’s class, the program will be called College Now. • Superintendent Bove gave each Board member a copy of the student-produced Middle College newsletter “Re-Create.”
