GOOGLE at Cupertino High School |
|
Cupertino Business and Math Teacher Chin Song’s International Business students listened intently to speaker Chikai Ohazama, co-founder of Keyhole
(now Google Earth). |
This event showcased Cupertino High School during National Geography Awareness Week in partnership with the Asia Society, ESRI, Google, and The Smithsonian. Chikai Ohazama, Kate Hurowitz, PR person from Google, and Song decided to tie in the importance of global information mapping using Google Earth’s collaborative features with the Harvard Business case study on India that the students are learning in the International Business class. The primary goal was for Google to showcase a school using “Web 2.0 technologies” (collaborative rather than informational...Wikipedia versus. Britannica) to enhance learning with geography and greater human awareness. The lesson covered 50 minutes of presentation by Chikai (primarily using Google Earth) addressing the topics above followed by questions from the students. A reporter and cameraman from local NBC11 interviewed students Michael Lai and Eva Roa. Board Member Bill Wilson attended and thoroughly enjoyed the presentation. Wilson’s email to Chin Song: “It is wonderful that you are giving your students the opportunity to learn in such a creative way using these resources. I am sure this gives them a depth of understanding and a degree of excitement way beyond what traditional methods alone would provide. It is great to see technology, business, geography, and culture all integrated so effectively.” |
A delegation of 18 educators from Korea including teachers
and the Superintendent of the Seoul Board of Education
visited Fremont High School on November 26. Fremont High
staff, students, and parents shared information about their
school with a focus on parent support, student life, and
technology in the schools. Board Member Bill Wilson,
Associate Superintendent Paul Cheng, and Technology
Coordinator Scott Harrington shared the District and Board
perspectives. The delegation enjoyed a tour of the campus.
Data Technician Sue Yim did a wonderful job as translator.

EL ESTOQUE Student Newspaper Staff
Monta Vista High School’s student newspaper El Estoque received a Pacemaker Award, which many consider to be the high school equivalent of the Pulitzer Prize. El Estoque was
one of only seven newspapers to win the award in its category,
and it was one of three winners in all of California. CONGRATULATIONS to journalism students and
advisor Michelle Balmeo. |
