DISTRICTWIDE DODGEBALL TOURNAMENT TONS OF FUN!
Monta Vista High School Teachers Mollie Guadiamos, Spanish, Bonnie Belshe, Social Studies, and Jon Stark, math, were the driving forces in beginning the Dodgeball challenge to MVHS staff and the rest of the district. "The high level of play, enthusiasm displayed, and energy from the fans was a delight to observe," stated Byron Lee, Homestead High School FBLA adviser and business teacher. "I talked with many students after the event, and they were simply blown away at the quality of all of the teams. The HHS FBLA students and advisers truly appreciate the coaches, players and amazing support staff that generated in excess of $4,500 for the Sunnyvale Public Library. In addition, the cool pirate trophies were provided by the ESC! Perhaps we can continue to have some intradistrict scrimmages since everyone that participated enjoyed the camaraderie. Monta Vista has graciously offered to host a tournament in the spring."

SPECIAL THANKS to Sunnyvale Police Chief Don Johnson and Officer Jim Davis along with our own Ray Ramsey for
refereeing the matches.

And HHS FBLA President
Charles Liu
did an outstanding job announcing the matches -
felt like we were ringside
at a professional event!

Two HHS FBLA students organized the tournament — Rohit Ramchandani and Max Babicz — with FBLA Adviser Graeme Logie.

Acting Superintendent
Polly Bove
with Board Members Nancy Newton and Barbara Nunes, CBO/Associate Supt. Jeff Kiehl and Associate Supt. Kate Jamentz, presented the "Pirate Plaques" to each winning division and the "Treasure Chest" trophy to the winner in the Principal's Challenge.

ACE Tech Expert Mike Hathaway has generously offered to
share his photos of the big event at

Third Annual Districtwide Band Expo
The Fremont Union High School District Marching Bands hosted their Third Annual Districtwide Band Expo at Fremont High School’s Diesner Field on Saturday, September 30th. This was a fundrasing event that netted $1,055 for each band program at all five high schools — Cupertino, Fremont, Homestead, Lynbrook, and Monta Vista. Each marching band performed their fieldshow twice — first to the band students on the back sideline and then to friends and family on the front sideline. At the November 7th Board of Trustees Meeting, Monta Vista High School Music Teacher Jon Fey introduced the band directors from each high school — Sheldon Galdeira, CHS; Joe Kelly, FHS; John Burn, HHS; Chris Marra, LHS; and Jon Fey, MVHS — who in turn introduced their drum major(s). Board Members presented each drum major with a plaque in recognition of their bands’ participation in the Band Expo.

Chinese Delegation Visits Fremont High

A delegation from the City of Pinghu, China visited the City of Sunnyvale on November 8th. After meeting with Mayor Ron Swegles and other city officials, the delegation traveled to Fremont High School for a tour. Chinese and American educational systems have many differences and the delegation is seeking ways to improve the educational quality of Chinese high schools.

FUHSD Trustee Kathryn Ho and her husband T.N. Ho, Santa Clara County School Board Trustee, met with the delegation along with Acting Superintendent Polly Bove; Associate Superintendent Kate Jamentz; FHS students Avigale DeAsis, Susan Ma, and Linh Hoang; FHS Business Teacher Daryl Olsen; and FHS Assistant Principal Dorothy Abreu-Coito.

Trustee Ho stated, “My husband was born in the state of Chejing where Pinghu is located. I am impressed by their enthusiasm to establish future relationship with us. I encourage our teachers to have a summer adventure in China by teaching a Summer English Program in Pinghu. Teaching English in China should be enjoyable because students are enthusiastic about learning English. It’s a city close to the coast and China’s largest city Shanghai. It would be similar to Cupertino and Sunnyvale relative to San Francisco.”

Delegation members included: Wang Huagen, Vice Chairman, Political Consultative Conference of Pinghu City; Li Ren, Vice Mayor, People’s Government; Wang Mugen, Vice President, Foreign Friendship Association; Ge Renlong, Vice Director General, Culture and Sports Bureau; Liang Xiaojun, Vice Director General, Finance Bureau; Shen Qigen, President, China East Industry & Trade Co., Ltd. of Jiaxing; Jiang Yueming, General Manager, Dayang Clothing Processing Ltd. of Jiaxing; and Fei Yonghua, President, Yuechun Woolen Clothing Processing Ltd. of Pinghu.

STUDENT BOARD MEMBER REPORT
Student Board Member Peter Lu, Monta Vista High School senior, reported on school activities at all five high schools. Peter stated that the districtwide college fair held at Homestead High School was one of the best ever and ran very smoothly thanks to the help of HHS Link Crew. Peter enthusiastically announced that the districtwide Staff Dodgeball Tournament sponsored by HHS FBLA raised over $6,000 for the Sunnyvale Public Library. He also announced that IDC students are interested in helping the District with the new food policy for next school year by surveying students to find out what types of food they would like offered in school cafeterias

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
The Fremont Union High School District Marching Bands hosted their Third Annual Expo at Fremont High School’s Diesner Field on Saturday, September 30th. See District Bulletin. • Acting Superintendent Polly Bove reviewed the new Supplemental School Counseling Program (AB1802). The state funding estimate is $71 per student towards hiring additional guidance counselors. The program defines counseling services as being provided by credentialed guidance counselors for students who are either at risk of not graduating due to credit deficiencies or because they have not passed the high school exit exam. Bove stated that the District will use these funds to support current guidance planning. She also reported that the District is well-prepared to meet the program’s December 31st deadline to hold individualized “guidance conferences” with all current 11th grade students who have not passed the CAHSEE. District guidance counselors and administrators are working as a team in meeting with these students. • Director of Educational Services Trudy Gross reported on the lunch meeting she attended on the Childrens’ Health Initiative sponsored by Supervisor Liz Kniss (County of Santa Clara Board of Supervisors). She reported there have been several successful events to enroll children in Healthy Kids giving low-income children in the county health insurance and access to health care services. Gross stated that she plans to help get the Cupertino Union and Sunnyvale School Districts involved. • Polly Bove acknowledged John Treanor as the new Pool Manager, approved on the personnel report and in attendance at the meeting. John was the School Facilities Supervisor at Lynbrook High School.

LEGAL EXPENSES RELATING TO DISMISSAL OF SUPERINTENDENT
As requested by a community member and a Board member, the District is reporting expenses connected with the dismissal of the superintendent.
