Over 230 people attended this fundraising event wearing various fun, sporty, glamorous, silly, and even gaudy hats! Through the generous support of the dinner’s sponsors and the silent auction, the Foundation raised over $53,000. This year the Foundation’s major focus is to fund state-of-the-art media equipment and supplies for the libraries in all five high schools. The Foundation is also continuing to fund the AVID program, Technology Grants for financially challenged students, and the Teens With Tots program.

BOARD REPORT for Board of Trustees Meeting November 1, 2005

*******************************************************
COMMUNICATIONS
Prior to closed session, attorney Barbara Fielden addressed the Board about two California statutes #49066 and #49070 relating to changing grades. Fielden addressed the Board again at the beginning of open session as did Monta Vista High School parent Hessam Moghtader and his son, Monta Vista High School student John Moghtader. Superintendent Dr. Steve Rowley informed Fielden that the District’s attorney would be contacting her the morning of November 2, 2005.

NORTHWEST YMCA
Community Member Larry Dean and YMCA Executive Director Elaine Glissmeyer gave a presentation on the YMCA’s role in Santa Clara Valley, specifically in the Cities of Cupertino and Sunnyvale. Glissmeyer noted that the “Y” is eager to engage teens and asked the District to collaborate with them in the process. Glissmeyer specifically highlighted the “California YMCA Model Legislature & Model Court” program, a statewide youth educational program that teaches the values of democracy by creating citizen leaders from the State’s high school population.

UPDATE ON ALGEBRA AND ENGLISH LEARNER INITIATIVES
Kate Jamentz, Associate Superintendent of Teaching & Learning, highlighted progress made in districtwide Algebra and English Learner Initiatives. She acknowledged that the work done by the participants in both initiatives has been extremely collaborative.

Algebra Initiative began with 26 teachers representing all five high schools and has grown to a group of 32 teachers—next steps...

  • Continue professional development as planned and invite continued participation from feeder districts.
  • Access feasibility of an “academic youth development” summer school program focused on Algebra. If possible, plan pilot for summer of 2005-06.
  • Assess feasibility of piloting a year long double-block program for students typically assigned to take Algebra IA and IB.
  • Support teachers interested in restructuring Algebra IA and IB curriculum to make effective use of the double-block format.

English Learner Initiative includes 47 teachers and administrators—next steps...

  • Convene English Language Development (ELD) teachers to align course expectations for ELD and to select curriculum materials aligned to those expectations.
  • Consider feasibility of adding additional targeted course options for students in early stages of English acquisition (e.g. academic reading and vocabulary in preparation for mainstream science, math, and social science).
  • Sponsor course-alikes so that teachers of sheltered content courses can work together on instructional planning.
  • Continue collaboration with consultant Aida Walqui in effort to build an in-house District professional development program focused on instructional strategies for English Learners.

CBEDS (California Basic Education Data Systems)
Director of Guidance, Attendance, and Alternative Programs Shelby Spain stated that the District’s CBEDS enrollment numbers show an increase of 259 students over CBEDS 2004-05. While this increase is greater than projected, it is far less than the District would have seen had we not initiated residency verification procedures. District staff is currently working with a projection consultant regarding projected enrollment for the 2006-07 school year and beyond and will provide school capacity recommendations to the Board of Trustees in late January 2006.

SEXUAL HARASSMENT TRAINING
Director of Human Resources Nancy Braughton Fischer stated that District administrators received the required two-hour Sexual Harassment training (Assembly Bill 1825) on Wednesday, October 26th with a makeup session to be held in November. Fischer stated that the District intends to offer similar training to all employees and students as well.

COMMUNICATIONS
Homestead High School PTA Member (and former parent) George Hamma expressed concern that his daughter, a freshman at Dartmouth, told him that an “unofficial poll” of Dartmouth’s first-year students showed that students from California public schools are less prepared in English grammar than from all other states. • CSEA President Pam Coppel stated that CSEA would like to donate a tree in Tom Pate’s honor to be planted at the Educational Services Center. • FEA President Tom Avvakumovits informed the Board members that their recent resolutions in opposition to propositions 74, 75, and 76 were very well received among his colleagues in other districts, noting that several other school boards adopted similar resolutions. • Board Member Nancy Newton informed the Board of the outstanding Challenge Day program she participated in at Homestead High School, encouraging them to get involved if they can at the next one to be held in March.
