Cafeterias Offer Online Pre-Payment Service |
|
Cupertino, Fremont, Homestead, Lynbrook, and Monta Vista High Schools are offering a new online meal payment service for parents. On this secure website http://www.ezschoolpay.com, parents can establish a free account and enter payments to their child’s school meal account
using a VISA or MASTERCARD. Parents are instructed to create an account and link their children to the account before entering a credit. Payments are received directly into the high school’s Meal Tracker Point of Sale system. Online payments may be done anytime from any internet computer. Balances are updated as often as every ten minutes. The EZSchoolPay.com
site has security measures in place to protect the loss, misuse, and alteration of the information under their control. Credit card information is protected by the most sophisticated internet
security available (secure-socket layer with 128-bit digital encryption). In addition to helping
schools take advantage of the latest technology, the service is a great convenience to parents.
Parents and students will no longer worry about having cash on hand each day to purchase
meals at school and will be assured that meals will continue uninterrupted. Students and the
schools will appreciate that cafeteria lines will move quickly as more parents and students
take advantage of this service.

NEWS from Nutrition Department
Nutrition Services Manager Bill Schuster joined the District last July and has immediately made
a positive impact in bringing the District into compliance with new federal and state wellness policies. As of July 1, 2007, the District no longer sells soft drinks during the school day (Senate Bill 965) and follows strict guidelines for calories, fat, saturated fat and full meal combinations that meet USDA-approved reimbursable meal pattern requirements (Senate Bill 12). In July 2006, the District eliminated the sale of candy and fried burritos on campuses.
BOARD POLICY 5030 Student Wellness — adopted June 2006
|
Our Board of Trustees recognizes the link between
student health and learning and desires to provide a
comprehensive program promoting healthy eating and
physical activity for District students. The District
Wellness Council assists with policy development and
advises the District on health-related issues, activities,
policies, and programs. Council duties include planning
and implementing activities to promote health within
the school or community. The District is seeking parent
volunteers to serve on the Wellness Council. If you are
interested, contact Gloria Dirkmaat, Coordinator of
Student Support Services at gloria_dirkmaat@fuhsd.org
or 408-522-2233. The first meeting for this school year
will be held on Thursday, October 25th at 3:30pm in
the Board Room at the District Office, 589 W. Fremont
Avenue in Sunnyvale. |
Student Board Member JingJing Xia
and IDC students are developing a
six-month plan for the cafeteria
updating project begun last year in
conjunction with the District’s
Wellness Council. The overwhelming
consensus to improve the cafeterias
in all five high schools is to make
them more comfortable by painting
the walls, bringing in new furniture,
and providing music and/or videos
for students to enjoy. Students are
seeking DONATIONS and
FUNDRAISING IDEAS
to help them with their project! |
BOARD REPORT for Board of Trustees Meetings October 2, 2007
*****************************************************************
STUDY SESSION The District contracted with Brad Senden, The Center for Community Opinion, to conduct a survey regarding a possible bond measure and/or parcel tax proposal for District residents. Senden presented the survey results from 602 completed telephone interviews with registered voters in the District.
PUBLIC HEARING Approval of the FUHSD Application for a General Renewal Waiver to the California Department of Education Waiving Education Code (EC) Section 52084 (a), the Ninth Grade Class Size Reduction Program, Allowing the District to Receive Funding for an Intensive (double period) Algebra Program for Targeted Ninth Graders in the 2007-2008 School Year—no comment
STUDENT BOARD MEMBER REPORT Student Board Member JingJing Xia reported on activities at four of our high schools, stating Homecoming activities were coming up at all schools. She introduced fellow IDC student Vana Christos, ASB President of Fremont High School, who reported on her school activities. JingJing gave Board members the first issue of the Cupertino High School student newspaper, the Prospector.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
• Academic Deputy Superintendent Kate Jamentz gave an update on the Algebra Initiative:
District teachers participating in the Algebra Initiative met today and looked at results of
the common assessment given last spring. Jamentz noted that a literacy/vocabulary
development component has been added to the curriculum and that two of the teachers
have developed an online tool for curriculum sharing across the District. Facilitator of the
meeting was I-Heng McComb.
• Jamentz announced that the first meeting of the Student Services and Guidance Work
Group will be held on Thursday, October 4, to develop commitments that will guide
assessment and redesign of guidance services at each high school.
UPDATE ON PEER TUTORIAL PROGRAMS
Academic Deputy Superintendent Kate Jamentz distributed a summary of peer tutorial programs offered at Fremont, Homestead, Lynbrook, and Monta Vista High Schools. The summary described how each functioned; who is served, who has access, what resources are available, what facilities are used, role of the coordinator, and the success and impact of the program. The summary shows that all function slightly differently but share commonalities—supported by staff at all schools and serve struggling and high performing students. There was considerable variance in the cost to run the programs at each high school. Associate Superintendent Paul Cheng stated that peer tutorial programs are very valuable and support instruction. He acknowledged that the Homestead tutorial program has been moved from classrooms to the library due to space utilization and supervision issues. Homestead administrators plan to hold a meeting soon of interested parties to discuss how to revamp their tutorial program to best serve the needs of students. Several parents from Homestead High School’s Peer Tutorial Program expressed their continuing concerns regarding changes to the Program. Board President Barbara Nunes thanked the parents for coming and reiterated the concerns they expressed. She added this is an opportunity to be innovative when looking at the needs of students and examining how programs are operating at other schools.
FREMONT HIGH SCHOOL PLAN AND TITLE I REPORT
Principal Peggy Raun-Linde presented an overview of the Fremont High School Plan and Title I Report. She noted that 61% of FHS students are English Learners or have been English Learners while a student at the high school. Fifty-five percent of the students qualify for and participate in the Title I Program. The plan and report will be presented to the Board for approval at the October 16, 2007 Board meeting and posted online when approved.
