On Wednesday, October 5th, from 5-9pm at Community Hall adjacent to the Cupertino Library, the Citizens of Cupertino Cross-Cultural Consortium (5Cs) will be hosting an informative discussion titled “Conversations Across Cultures - Are We Really Connecting?” Two San Jose State University professors and their graduate student assistants will give a talk summarizing their recent research on intercultural and race relations in the Bay Area. The team will also recommend ways to facilitate positive intercultural contact among people of different cultural backgrounds.
Dr. Rona T. Halualani,Associate Professor of Communication Studies at San Jose State University and her research team associates (Dr.Deanna Fassett, Assistant Professor of Communication Studies at SJSU,and Larissa Bailon and Dary Yos, graduate research assistants at SJSU),will present findings and insights from their five-year study of local intercultural/race relations • Since Spring 2001, Dr. Halualani's team has investigated the amount and nature of intercultural contact among racially/ethnically different groups in Bay Area neighborhoods and on local college campuses. Surveys, interviews, focus groups, diaries and analysis of newspaper articles and institutional documents were employed, and the researched groups include Asian Americans, Whites (Europeans), Blacks/African Americans and Latinos. In this presentation, Dr. Halualani and her associates will discuss the implications of their research for Cupertino neighborhood and high school settings. • Dr. Halualani is a dynamic and compelling speaker, and the team's presentation promises to be both provocative and practical.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
Superintendent Dr. Steve Rowley introduced Dennis Fresé, Director of Adult & Community Education (ACE), who announced that ACE is celebrating 150 years of Adult Education in the State of California. He presented the Board and Superintendent with a calendar of Adult Education programs and a pin commemorating 150 years. He also announced that ACE has developed a new teacher handbook and is looking forward to using its two new portables as a classroom and new print center.

STUDENT BOARD MEMBER REPORT
Student Board of Trustees Member Helen Yang, Cupertino High School senior, reported on various activities at the five high schools, highlighting the different student directed hurricane Katrina relief efforts currently in progress.

LONG RANGE PLANNING UPDATE—GOALS 2005-2006
Superintendent Rowley and Associate Superintendent of Teacher & Learning Kate Jamentz answered questions of the Board regarding expectations for addressing the 2005-2006 goals of the Long Range Plan (LRP). Jamentz confirmed that the high schools will present their school plans early next year in a new format that integrates the LRP, WASC expectations, the state’s single plan, and new data sets currently being developed districtwide. Dr. Rowley stated that the sites and District are looking carefully at both A+Board and School Loop as personalization devices to further improve school to home and home to school communication. CBO/Associate Superintendent of Business Services Geoffrey Kiehl stated that the District’s Parcel Tax Committee should be in place by next spring. The Board requested updates on addressing and meeting the 2005-06 goals throughout the year. Homestead High School Parent George Hamma asked if the District has a current practice or plan to track how our students do after they graduate. Jamentz stated that the state is working on a K-16 system to track students from kindergarten through college with a single identification number. This is to begin implementation next year. She also stated that sites are building into their school plans a means to find out how many of their graduates need to take remedial classes in college and/or do not pass specific placement tests.

ENROLLMENT UPDATE
Director of Guidance, Attendance, & Alternative Programs Shelby Spain reported that 9,747 students are registered as of September 15, 2005. She reported that since July 1, 55 students have been denied enrollment into the District due to false claims of residency or unsubstantiated residency documentation. An additional 27 requests for interdistrict transfers into the District were denied due to space and capacity restrictions. As a result of recent investigations and returned mail (about 600 pieces in past two weeks), the District has sent five-day disenrollment letters to an additional 82 students. Finally, based on reports received from various sources, residences of approximately 130 additional students will be visited by District investigators over the next several weeks. Enrollment at each site as of September 15: CHS—1,527; FHS—1,830; HHS—2,078; LHS—1,846; and MVHS—2,466.
