105 Semifinalists in the 2008 National Merit Scholarship Competition
One hundred and five seniors in the Fremont Union High School District, comprised of Cupertino, Fremont, Homestead, Lynbrook, and Monta Vista High Schools, have been named Semifinalists in the National Merit Scholarship Program. These students have earned the opportunity to compete for Merit Scholarship awards offered to Finalists next spring. To become Finalists, Semifinalists must have an outstanding high school academic record, be endorsed and recommended by their school principal, and submit SAT scores that confirm their earlier qualifying test performance on the PSAT/NMSQT. Also, both the Semifinalists and the school will complete a detailed scholarship application, which includes the student’s self-descriptive essay as well as information about the student’s participation and leadership in school and community activities.. About 16,000 students, or approximately one-third of the 50,000 high scorers nationwide, were notified that they qualified as Semifinalists. BOARD REPORT for Board of Trustees Meetings September 18, 2007

********************************************************************

COMMUNICATIONS
CSEA President Pam Coppel thanked Superintendent Polly Bove and Human Resources Director Nancy Fischer for attending the CSEA Chapter meeting, noting classified staff’s appreciation for Bove’s explanation of the classified job description study process. Coppel stated that classified staff appreciates receiving updates on this process. FEA President Ben Clausnitzer noted English Language Development Teacher Welton Kwong who will represent the Fremont Union High School District at Santa Clara County’s 38th Annual Teacher Recognition Day to be held Monday, September 24th at the Heritage Theatre in Campbell.

PUBLIC HEARING Sufficiency of Textbooks and/or Instructional Materials No comment

STUDENT BOARD MEMBER REPORT
Student Board Member JingJing Xia reported on activities at four of our high schools, projecting pictures of various events—a nice addition to her report. She introduced fellow IDC student Christine Lebar, Cupertino High School senior, who reported on her school activities. JingJing provided the Board with dates for upcoming Homecoming events at each high school.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
   • CBO/Associate Superintendent Geoffrey Kiehl updated the Board on the State Budget:
Governor Schwarzenegger signed the State Budget passed by the Senate on August 21st —
State Budget has no significant impact on our Adoption Budget; State Budget includes
$2.6 billion reserve that is significantly larger than the $1.9 billion reserve proposed in the
May Revise (need for larger reserve is due to concerns of an economic slowdown that could
require budget cuts in 2008-2009); outlook for this year is modest, with slowing economic
growth; today’s announcement that the Federal Reserve is lowering the federal funds rate
is a good sign; for the first four months since the release of the May Budget Revision, state
revenues are off $1.2 billion from budgeted levels; and State Budget assumes statewide
property tax growth of 10% but this could be in jeopardy due to decline in housing market.
Kiehl will present more comprehensive budget information at the District’s First Interim
Budget Study Session scheduled for the December Board meeting.
   • Coordinator of Facilities and Maintenance Operations Carl Dunn presented the 2007-08
School IPM Recordkeeping Calendar to each Board Member.
He reported that the
Healthy Schools Act AB2260 requires all schools in California to keep records of every
pesticide application and report pesticide use to parents. Integrated Pest Management (IPM)
provides this calendar as a planning tool for the management of pests/pesticides in school
buildings and grounds and chose a photo of Fremont High School for the cover and for the
July spread. Dunn recognized FHS Assistant to the Principal Sue Larson for taking and
submitting the photo. The Board commended Carl Dunn for his work statewide in this area
and for using other methods for pest control instead of increased use of pesticides.
   • Director of Educational Services Trudy Gross reported that the Young Parent Program
now housed in Adult & Community Education is fully operational. She thanked ACE staff
for their support of this program. Gross also reported that a “more official” opening of the
      Ropes Course at Baylands Park
is being planned and the District will begin to look for
outside funding to facilitate use of the Course districtwide.

2006-2007 ASSESSMENT & ACCOUNTABILITY OVERVIEW
Coordinator of Curriculum and Assessment Bryan Emmert gave an overview of student achievement results districtwide answering the following questions: Has the District met annual API targets? How do District students do on tests required for high school graduation? What percentage of District students are meeting or exceeding state standards on key courses? Has the District met annual AYP goals established by NCLB? How do District students do in college level coursework taken in high school? How do District students do on tests designed to predict success in college? Emmert noted that school specific information will be reported in the Annual School Plans to be presented at October and November Board meetings.

this job description with site personnel

  • Adopted Resolution #078-05 “Foothill-De Anza 50th Anniversary” Congratulating
Foothill-De Anza Community College for its Distinguished Record of Service to Students
     and the Community
  • Changed Board Meeting dates to November 27 (canceled November 20) and December 11
     (canceled December 4).

COMMUNICATIONS continued
Several parents from Homestead High School’s Peer Tutorial Program expressed their concerns regarding possible changes to the Program. Superintendent Bove assured the parents that the Peer Tutorial Program is not being reduced but because the school’s enrollment has increased by over 400 students in the last few years, the need for classroom space has increased as well. HHS Principal Graham Clark is working to find an alternate location for the Peer Tutorial Program (currently using five classrooms) on campus— both the library and cafeteria are being considered along with other options.
