• Coord of Curriculum & Assessment Bryan Emmert updated the Board on the AYP & API:
The District, all five high schools, and Community School met all components of 2007
Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP). Emmert pointed out the importance in all five high
schools meeting AYP this year as beginning next year, 2008, the performance target
increases approximately 11% each year until 2014. This includes performance target increases for all sub groups as well. Emmert also reviewed API scores.
• Director of Educational Services Trudy Gross updated the Board on Summer School:
Summer School served 2,155 students this year at Cupertino and Fremont High Schools.
After three weeks, 94% of the students were still attending. An excellent office structure
with two principals, office administration, security and technical support allowed staff to
focus on morale and keep track of all the special programs. These programs included: two-
hour and four-hour ELD classes at FHS; Algebra Allies; Empowerment, which utilized
PLATO software and the Ropes Course at Baylands Park; CAHSEE workshop; and
Training with Transitions Summer Work Academy.
• Coord of Student Support Services Gloria Dirkmaat updated the Board on enrollment:
Enrollment districtwide is 92 over projected as of September 4, 2007. She expects
numbers to be more accurate after schools report no-shows later this week.
• Strategic Business & Community Manager Glenn Evans updated the Board:
Consultant Brad Senden has completed the community survey questionnaire regarding
possible bond and parcel tax elections. About 600 community members will be surveyed
via phone beginning this week with the results available late next week. Evans showed
the Board a draft of “Thank You” card for parent support of past bond and parcel tax
measures to be distributed at Back-to-School Nights.
• Academic Deputy Superintendent Kate Jamentz updated the Board:
Jamentz provided the Board with a draft outline of the process to revision “student
support and guidance services” in the District. One goal is to create a set of District
commitments to students and families describing the information and services they can
expect over the course of their four years in high school. These commitments will then
become guidelines for schools to guide them in providing services. Another goal is to
spread the responsibility to provide guidance services throughout the school system by
providing professional development activities for staff, training for career center staff on
processing of college applications, and working with guidance staff to help them
understand English Learner students’ needs during their four years in high school.
