DISTRICT BULLETIN — Volume XIII, Issue 17
*******************************************

WELCOME PETER LU
2006-2007 Student Member of
Board of Trustees

Superintendent Dr. Steve Rowley introduced Peter Lu, senior at Monta Vista High School, as the new student member of the Board of Trustees for the 2006-2007 school year. Dr. Rowley welcomed Peter and his family, who were present for Peter’s first Board meeting, and stated that he and the Board are very impressed with Peter’s background at school and in the community and know that he will make an enormous contribution on the Board this year. Peter applied to be the student member of the Fremont Union High School District Board of Trustees because he wants to help District students voice their opinions to the people who can affect change, the Board of Trustees.

“I want for every school in the District to feel comforted by the fact that the student voices of each school are being heard and represented objectively,” Peter stated in his application form. “I want to also strengthen the ties between the student government of all five schools and the Board of Trustees and make sure that each side is able to comprehend what the other side’s take is on an important concern.”

As an award-winning member of Monta Vista High School’s Speech and Debate Team, Peter’s proven exceptional communication skills will come in handy as a member of the Board of Trustees. Besides being able to learn new concepts quickly and communicate ideas clearly and effectively, Peter is also proficient in English, French, and Chinese languages and has very strong math and science skills.

Outside of his active school life, Peter spends much of his time volunteering in the community. In 2005 he helped supervise 15 elementary school children at Camp Galileo, helping them with their lessons and ensuring that the logistics of the science camp went smoothly. For the past two years Peter has tutored students in math, English, and biology including setting goals for their progress and talking with their teachers. As a member of the Octagon Optimists Community Service Club, Peter has amassed over 100 hours of service to date and received a “Most Dedicated Member” award.

Peter also has time for sports and has played in the National Junior Basketball league for the past three years and plans to continue playing. He also works at Deep Cliff Golf Course which affords him free golf whenever he wants — nice perk!

Board Members Homer Tong, Barbara Nunes, Nancy Newton, Avie Katz, and Kathryn Ho welcomed Peter, all agreeing that his perspective as a student is one that they value highly and that they look forward to working with him this school year.

HIRING UPDATE
Nancy B. Fischer, Director of Human Resources, acknowledged Jason Crutchfield as the new coordinator of HR, who was approved on the personnel report and in attendance at the meeting. She then reviewed the New Teacher Ethnicity Report for the 2006-2007 School Year. Of the total new hires, 18% are Asian, 3% are African American, 10% are Hispanic and 69% are White (about the same percentages as last year). It is the District’s goal of its Long Range Plan as well as of the Board of Trustees to hire a work force that better matches the demographics of our student population. Fischer stated that the Asian American Parents Association (AAPA) provided some candidates, but most are not fully credentialed as of yet. Most of these candidates were indeed interviewed by the District and when they finish their programs, will be a source of new teacher recruitment for next school year. Fischer stated that the District’s Recruitment Fair held in April was extremely successful because of the 70 employees (teachers, support staff, and administrators) who worked that day to screen and hire new teachers on the spot. She also thanked our five principals for their outstanding work on interviews these past few months and in deciding the best placement of new teachers.
