Board Members presented Peter with a Graduation Cap with Mickey Ears and Tassle

2006-2007 Student Board Member Peter Lu Recognized
Board Members and Superintendent Polly Bove honored Student Board Member Peter Lu, Monta Vista High School senior, as the articulate, introspective spokesperson for the District’s 10,200 students this year recognizing the “excitement and spirit of investigation in all that he does.” They added their deep appreciation for his work with the Board and the Intra District Council, wishing him the best at Yale University in the fall. Peter was presented the Board’s Community Service Award Medal at Monta Vista’s Senior Awards Night. This Medal recognizes students who, during their senior year in high school, provide at least 80 hours of volunteer service to non-profit organizations within our community, and is one of the few things that can be worn during the graduation ceremony. The Board of Trustees awarded 144 seniors the Medal this year acknowledging over 18,981 hours of volunteer work in our community.

Foundation Donates $60,000 to Revamp District’s Web Presence
Fremont Union High Schools Foundation Co-Presidents Kathee Kraker and Laurie Dean presented a check for $60,000 to Superintendent Polly Bove to redesign and implement cutting edge technology on all websites distictwide. This multi-year plan will include such possible tools as eCommerce to buy yearbooks, ASB cards, etc. online; downloadable, customized calendars; improved two-way communication tools; streaming video; and podcasts to name a few enhancements.
Last year the Foundation funded $55,000 to Music and Performing Arts ($40K for musical instruments & $15K for sound and light equipment), $10,000 to classroom technology ($5K for graphing calculators & $5K for tech grants), $1,000 for business development, and $5,000 for Teens with Tots for a total of $71,000.

BOARD REPORT for Board of Trustees Meeting JUNE 5, 2007

*******************************************************************

STUDY SESSION: 2007-2008
Proposed Budget CBO/Associate Superintendent Geoffrey Kiehl presented an overview of the proposed budget for the 2007-08 school year. Parcel and property tax revenues coupled with residency verification and staffing efficiency yielded a moderate increase in general fund balance for next year. Office development is picking up in Sunnyvale — a good sign for secured and unsecured property tax growth. One time funds from mandated costs reimbursement allowed the District to end this school year with a projected 5% reserve.

ANNOUNCEMENT OF ACTION TAKEN IN CLOSED SESSION
Board President Barbara Nunes announced that the Board unanimously voted to accept an out-of-court settlement in the lawsuit brought against the District by former Superintendent Stephen Rowley.

PUBLIC HEARING:
Adoption Budget for 2007-2008 (Including Budget Allocation Plan and Service Delivery Model for SELPA II) — no comment

STUDENT BOARD MEMBER REPORT
Student Board Member Peter Lu, in his last report, gave the Board copies of Verdadera, a “publication created by and for Monta Vista teens for the purpose of instigating communication concerning the ‘real world’ of high school within the community.”

SPECIAL RECOGNITION
Superintendent Polly Bove recognized Student Board Member Peter Lu (see District Bulletin); Communications Manager Cindy McArthur, named Leadership Team Member-of-the-Year; and retiree Colleen Medeiros, Executive Assistant to the Superintendent. Mederios is retiring June 30th after 13 years in the District assisting four superintendents: Mary Panucci, Joe Hamilton, Steve Rowley, and Polly Bove.

SPECIAL PRESENTATION
Student Board Member Peter Lu introduced IDC students from the five high schools who presented their school’s survey results regarding Board Policy 5030 Student Wellness. The overwhelming consensus to improve the cafeterias in all five schools is to make them more comfortable by painting the walls, bringing in new furniture, and providing music and/or videos for students to enjoy. Survey results also pointed out that students feel the food is too expensive and of poor quality; they did say they would pay more for more appealing, healthier food. Superintendent Bove introduced the District’s new Cafeteria Manager Bill Shuster, who had been sitting in the audience and listening to the students’ presentation. He commented that he was very impressed with their work and is eager to receive and study the information they provided.

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
Superintendent Polly Bove applauded the work of the Fremont Union High Schools Foundation and accepted a donation for next school year (see District Bulletin). • Director of Educational Services Trudy Gross updated the Board on the very exciting $10,000 grant from BP’s A+ for Energy program awarded to Jason Heskett and Sean Cryan, special education teachers at Cupertino High School. Their grant proposal “Energy Conservation and Solar Power at Cupertino” involves buying and utilizing a solar panel to run a cell phone charge station, run a watering system for a garden, and create an energy conservation/solar power curriculum for a transitions class and science class. • Superintendent Bove introduced next year’s Student Board Member JingJing Xia, a current junior at Cupertino High School.

UPDATE ON MODERNIZATION OF EDUCATIONAL SERVICES CENTER
Board Members toured the area in the ESC just beginning modernization which will include much needed improvement to air conditioning and heating systems. Work is being done inhouse at minimal cost.

UPDATE ON CERTIFICATES OF COMPLETION FOR CLASS OF 2007
Bryan Emmert, Coordinator of Curriculum & Assessment, stated that as of today, 25 students districtwide have met the District’s graduation requirements but have not passed one or both parts of the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE). These 25 students will receive a Certificate of Completion at their graduation ceremony. Parents of these students were sent a letter explaining that their child would not receive a diploma and outlining steps that can be taken to pass the CAHSEE and earn a diploma.
