BOARD REPORT for Board of Trustees Meeting MAY 15, 2007

*******************************************************************

STUDY SESSION: Operational and Capital Projects Funding Needs and Strategies
CBO/Associate Superintendent Geoffrey Kiehl presented an overview of the operational and capital projects funding needs currently in the District. Strategies presented included possible scenarios for proceeding with another bond measure and parcel tax renewal. The Board will hold several study sessions on this topic in the summer and fall.

PUBLIC COMMUNICATION
Attorney Bern Steves, who stated he was representing some Cupertino High School parents, and CHS parents Jean Yih and John Adams addressed the Board regarding a testing controversy. • Michael Chang and Lisa Wang, representing the Cupertino Area Chinese Language Education Committee, thanked the District for working with CACLEC the past two year to improve Chinese language education in our high schools. They thanked the District’s Chinese language teachers for serving on the committee and acknowledged working with Superintendent Polly Bove, Academic Deputy Superintendent Kate Jamentz, Coordinator of Curriculum & Assessment Bryan Emmert, and many other District staff. Chang also recognized the incredible job the District did in offering the first ever Chinese AP test, which required separate computers for the 150 students tested. He noted that most school districts in the state were not able to offer it and thanked assistant principals, technicians, and staff districtwide for their success in implementing this test. • Phil Kesten, representing Fremont High School parents and the School Site Council, asked the Board to consider changing Board Policy to allow seniors who do not pass the California High School Exit Exam but have passed all District requirements for graduation to walk in their graduation ceremony. He noted that this is “quite an accomplishment for many students and participating in graduation is a significant event in the lives of these young people — they only get one chance to do this with their friends and their peers.”

STUDENT BOARD MEMBER REPORT Student Board Member Peter Lu reported on school activities at all high schools. Lu stated that IDC members will provide action plans for each high school at the District Wellness Committee meeting on May 24th.

ADULT & COMMUNITY EDUCATION and
EDUCATIONAL SERVICES CENTER RECOGNITION

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
Superintendent Polly Bove applauded the efforts of Bryan Emmert in coordinating AP Chinese testing districtwide. This was the first year this AP test has been given and we are one of the few districts to successfully administer it. • Superintendent Bove stated that it is difficult to hear parents express their concerns under Communications and not be able to respond as it was not an agendized item. She added that it is very important to hear all sides of an issue and promised to proceed. • Superintendent Bove introduced Paul Cheng, the new Associate Superintendent of Administrative Services beginning July 1, 2007. She stated that the District had over 60 applications for principal of Cupertino High School; six of them from sitting principals, one of which was Paul Cheng. It was apparent that he was highly qualified for the position of Associate Superintendent and Bove is honored that he said yes and decided to join the District.

Schools have used a variety of strategies for encouraging and supporting teachers to use these tools and plan to continue to do so next school year.
