CONGRATULATIONS Employees of the Year from Monta Vista High School

Nancy Sullivan’s career in the District began In 1997 as a special education teacher at Fremont High School. In 2005 she joined the Monta Vista High School team as a Lead Resource Specialist.

“Nancy’s energy, compassion and deep belief in ALL students has permeated all of Monta Vista,” stated Principal April Scott. “Our Learning Skills classes have a curriculum and are energetic, engaging environments plus we now have Inclusion classes in Biology, English, Social Studies, and Math. Nancy is in constant communication with general education teachers, supporting them with strategies and accommodations to meet the needs of students in their classes.”

“I enjoy teaching Learning Skills because I get a chance to work with students on a variety of curriculum,” stated Nancy. “I particularly enjoy supporting students in their writing and their analysis of literature. I also get to interact with many people on campus and districtwide. This helps me understand myself as a teacher and gives me input from others so I can always assess how I am doing and if there are new ideas we can implement to help others.”

Press Release

Cathy Nakamura joined Monta Vista High School as an instructional assistant in 1996. She wanted to work there because at that time the high school had a program for the hard of hearing and she had experience with sign language and working with deaf children.

“The hard of hearing program is no longer at Monta Vista, but fortunately Cathy is!” stated April Scott, Monta Vista High School Principal. “Cathy’s energy and optimistic attitude are a positive component to the special education department. She works with teachers in general education programs, as well as with students in Learning Skills classes.”

“I have always enjoyed the challenge of working with special education students one-on-one or in small groups,” stated Cathy. “Its fun to learn something new everyday and I have expanded my skills by using technology programs to support reading. Its a joy to see how the students improve and gain confidence during their four years at Monta Vista High School, not just academically but socially, too.”
