FEA President/CHS Social Science Teacher Tom Avvakumovits acknowledged some of the teachers who help make Homestead High School the wonderful place that it is ...
“Under the leadership of Shawnee Rivera & Laura Gonzales, the AVID program is taking off at Homestead High with two strong classes and possibly a third. Laura, Shawnee and Guidance Counselor Marissa Paceli have combined this year to recruit and enhance interest in this program among the student body.
Johanna McCormick recently became an ROP teacher and has taught the Journalism class at Homestead for a number of years. As the ELD Program grew this fall, Johanna agreed to pick up two extra ELD1 Sections.
Welton Kwong is the ELD Task Force Leader and ELD Coordinator at Homestead. He continues to do excellent work in the area of developing ELD curriculum as well as encourage teachers to grow in this area.
Math teachers Ben Clausnitzer, Erin Ronan, Angie Esswein and Marcia Smythe have devoted extensive energy toward the Algebra initiative — exploring and developing strategies to help students be more successful in Algebra, a focus area of the District’s Long Range Plan.
Finally, echoing Principal Graham Clark’s comments from earlier, Steve Headley should be lauded for coaching and teaching the Robotics Team. First, he has cultivated community partnerships and alumni financial support. And, along with countless hours outside of class, students are successfully building quite a robot!”

BOARD REPORT for Board of Trustees Meeting February 7, 2006

SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
Superintendent Dr. Steve Rowley announced that a Parent Alert regarding the website MySpace.com will be sent to parents next week in the school newsletters. This alert is intended to serve as a reminder about some of the most popular but potentially harmful websites teens frequent and to remind parents that we do our best at the District to filter these types of sites from school computer networks. This Alert is also posted on our website under the PARENT link.

HOMESTEAD HIGH SCHOOL REPORT
Principal Graham Clark stated that the new format for the annual school report worked very well, bringing new data to light for discussion with his School Site Council. It also served as a powerful tool to help the school move into their WASC accreditation process next year. For an overview of the Homestead High School Report, see District Bulletin. School Plans are online at www.fuhsd.org.

OPTIONS FOR STUDENTS IN THE CLASS OF 2006
WHO HAVE NOT PASSED (CAHSEE)

Beginning this school year, students who have not passed the California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) will not be granted a high school diploma, despite the fact that they may have completed the District’s graduation requirements. In past Board meetings, Board members have discussed the pros and cons of providing some sort of alternative certification that would allow non-passers in the class of 2006 to participate in graduation and graduation related activities. In this February 7th Board meeting agenda, District staff provided two options for non-passers. Just prior to this Board meeting, Board members and several District staff attended the CAHSEE Forum at the Santa Clara County Office of Education. All agreed that they came away from this forum feeling that they need additional time to consider more options. They asked staff to bring them two additional options for non-passers who have earned the required graduation credits but have not passed one or both parts of the CAHSEE by this June. One option would include a waiver for English Learner non-passers and the second option a waiver for all non-passers. The waiver would be for this school year only and would allow the students to participate in graduation exercises and receive a “Certificate of Completion” in lieu of a diploma. The Board agreed that to be fair to students and parents, a decision must be made this March.

RESPONSE TO TOLL BROTHERS CALABAZAS DEVELOPMENT
Superintendent Dr. Steve Rowley acknowledged that District staff will continue dialogue with the City of Cupertino to evaluate each new development proposal based on its impact to the District’s general fund, school capacities, and physical facilities. Based on recent analysis by School House Services, the planned developments in the Vallco area (including Toll Brothers) will generate student growth in the Cupertino High School attendance area of about 95 students. Dr. Rowley concluded that the City can expect the District to object to developers who make no attempt to mitigate facilities impact on our schools. Once these objections have been removed, the District will not support or oppose any project. The Board commended staff for presenting the concerns and needs of the District to the developers and the City. The Board acknowledged the District’s diligence in keeping the City aware of how their planned developments affect our district and that the awareness and knowledge of our issues and concerns are growing in the community.

OPEN ENROLLMENT AT LYNBROOK HIGH SCHOOL
FOR THE 2006-2007 SCHOOL YEAR
After reviewing long-range enrollment projections and a school capacity assessment, the Board approved Open Enrollment at Lynbrook High School for the 2006-2007 school year, allowing 50 students (incoming grades 9-12) to be accepted through a Lottery System. Procedures for Open Enrollment will be available soon — distributed to parents and the community and posted on the District’s website.
