DISTRICT BULLETIN — Volume XIV, Issue 10

Lynbrook Students “Job Shadow” Superintendent
Polly M. Bove |

|
On February 1 and 2, hundreds of Lynbrook High School students spent a few hours shadowing a professional on the job in their place of business. This Job Shadow Program sponsored by the Lynbrook PTSA gives students a chance to find out what it is like to be a doctor, or a judge, or an engineer, or even a superintendent. Five of those students spent part of their day with Superintendent Polly Bove. |
|
Thursday morning, freshmen Daniel Lewis, Charlie Sun, and Nikitha Mangalapally met in Superintendent Bove’s office with the District's classified employees’ union President Pam Coppel. Together they reviewed the agenda for the Board meeting to be held that evening. |
They also participated in a video interview for a documentary regarding the Job Shadow Program for KMVT Channel 15 Community Television (see http://www.kmvt15.org/ for info). Thursday afternoon, sophomore Ileena Mitra and freshman Akshay Maheshwari met with the District’s teachers’ union President Tom Avvakumovits, Vice President Jessica Branco, and Polly. |
Manager of Safety and Custodial Services Ray Ramsey later joined the students, Tom, and Polly for an informal discussion which included asking their opinion about surveillance cameras in schools and the proposed legislation which would make registering to vote a requirement to earn a diploma in California. |
|
The students were also given a tour of the Educational Services Center and visited an Algebra Initiative classroom at Fremont High School. For lunch, all five students were the guests of Pacific Resources and Richard Lowenthal at the Asian American Business Council/Cupertino Chamber Lunar New Year Luncheon held at Dynasty Seafood Restaurant at Vallco. Board President Barbara Nunes, Board Member Nancy Newton, CBO Geoffrey Kiehl, and Polly also attended the luncheon.
“I had the rare and enviable opportunity to spend the day with five outstanding and
amazing students from Lynbrook High School as they shadowed me,”
stated Superintendent Bove. “While I am not sure that I convinced them that becoming a superintendent should be their future career, I did receive some
important input and opinions from them that we will use in our District’s
upcoming decisions and plans. This is an experience that I would
recommend to anyone — it was a delight in every way.” |
BOARD REPORT for Board of Trustees Meeting February 1, 2007
*******************************************************************
STUDENT BOARD MEMBER REPORT
Student Board Member Peter Lu, Monta Vista High School senior, reported on school activities at all five high schools. Peter stated that some IDC students visited Palo Alto High School to view firsthand their heathy food choices for students and will report what they learned at the next District’s Wellness Committee meeting. Peter also reported that he and two other students participated in the all day districtwide guidance meeting held January 19th. He stated that IDC students plan to conduct forums at all five high schools to hear what students think about current guidance practices and how they can be improved. Board President Barbara Nunes congratulated Peter and the IDC for the varied, important activities they are doing for the benefit of all students in the District.
SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
Superintendent Polly Bove announced that Monta Vista High School Senior Ruby Murugesan has been selected as Outstanding Lineman of Santa Clara County and will receive a $1,000 scholarship from the National Football Foundation College Hall of Fame. In addition, two other MVHS players, Marcus Wood and Kota Kojima, were selected as All Metro Football Players. Bove also stated that first-year coach Matt Tait has “lit a fire” under the boys basketball team at Monta Vista this year, stating his “enthusiasm and love for the game has proven infectious.” • Superintendent Bove reported that she and CBO Geoffrey Kiehl attended the Sunnyvale City Council meeting on Tuesday, answering some questions about Fremont High School and about reducing student stress. She reported that the City is working on recording an “oral history” of Sunnyvale from noted residents Manuela and Faustino Rodriguez. Bove suggested that the Fremont High School video class help with this project. • Superintendent Bove recognized and welcomed Harry Bettencourt as interim principal for second semester at Cupertino High School.
LEGAL EXPENSES RELATING TO DISMISSAL OF FORMER SUPERINTENDENT
As requested by a community member and a Board member, the District is reporting expenses connected with the dismissal of former superintendent Steve Rowley. Legal expenses billed from law firm of Zampi and Associates for July 6, 2006 - January 18, 2007 total $89,701.61 plus the following amounts related to the resignation of teacher Tim Krieger but not directly related to the termination of the superintendent: $10,260 from law firm of Zampi and Associates; $21,011.10 from law firm of Bennett & Sharpe, Inc.; and $14,519.50 from law firm Lozano Smith for total of $45,790.60.
BOARD OF TRUSTEES...
• Reviewed an update on California High School Exit Exam (CAHSEE) results for the class of
2007. There are 81 students in the class of 2007 who are on track to meet all other graduation
requirements but have yet to pass the CAHSEE. Twenty eight are Special Education students
who by law may receive their diploma without passing the CAHSEE. The remaining 53
students have been offered ongoing interventions to help them pass and each high school is
monitoring their students carefully. These students have one more chance to pass the
CAHSEE before graduation when they take the test again this March. The Board discussed
agendizing whether non passers should participate in graduation.
• Approved Adult & Community Education 2006-2007 Course of Study Offerings for the
Fall and Winter Quarters
• Accepted 2005-2006 Independent Audit and certified the one 2005-2006 Audit Finding
Correction— Linda Todd, a partner of Vavrinkek, Trine, Day & Company, LLP congratulated
the District on having an audit committee comprised of two rotating Board members.
• Reviewed new and more detailed information on the 2007-2008 Governor’s January Budget
Proposal. Information from the Legislative Analyst’s Office and a more detailed Governor’s
budget proposal is due out in mid to late February.
• Accepted and adopted the Employment Contract for Superintendent Polly M. Bove
commencing December 5, 2006 through June 30, 2009 with a possible extension to 2010.
It is policy that the student Board member cannot vote on personnel issues, but Peter Lu
added
that he voted “yes in his heart!”
Board members unanimously agreed that Polly has brought the Board, the District, and the
community back together. Board President Barbara Nunes commented that it is not always
apparent to everyone how creative Polly has been in all that she does. She added that as the
Board looked at Polly’s goals and objectives in Closed Session, her creativity came through
along with clarity in knowing if the goals are reached. Superintendent Bove thanked the
Board for this vote of confidence and for the opportunity to work with them for a long time.
• Discussed possible dates for Board Development Study Session with CSBA facilitator
Christopher Maricle and possible dates for joint Board meetings with Cupertino Union and
Sunnyvale School Districts.
