Lynbrook High School
School Plan Overview 2005-2006
Presented by
Principal Mike White
|
FOCUS ON ACADEMIC INTEGRITY
Lynbrook High School expects the highest standards of honesty, ethical behavior, responsibility and self-discipline from all students. To promote these values and protect everyone's right to a fair education and to specify behaviors contrary to the standards, the LHSAcademic Code of Conduct has been established.
|
School Goals
- work toward an academically, socially and emotionally balanced school community that makes good choices
- ensure teachers become skilled at and use a variety of teaching strategies to address the needs of all learners
- maintain a focus on standards alignment in all curricular areas
- clarify and communicate Expected Schoolwide Learning Results (ESLRs) to the entire school community
Seven Teacher-Lead Action Plan Teams Collaborate to
- help students make appropriate choices
- guide students in AP/Honors decisions
- build community understanding (website/translations/info sharing)
- articulate with Miller Middle School
- work to reduce below proficient scores on state tests
- work to align curriculum with State Standards
- communicate Lynbrook's ESLRs
Expected Schoolwide Learning Results (ESLRs)
In addition to achieving the academic knowledge necessary to prepare students for post-secondary education, ESLRs represent what students should know and be able to do upon graduation.
- Students will demonstrate essential academic, learning, and workplace skills.
- Students will be effective information processors.
- Students will be effective communicators.
- Students will be responsible members of society.
- Students will explore their personal interests, interpersonal relationships, strengths, and talents to achieve and maintain a healthy lifestyle.
FEA President/CHS Social Science Teacher Tom Avvakumovits
acknowledged
the following teachers for their outstanding contributions to students’ success
at Lynbrook High School ...
"Sydney Marsh, Vivien Chien, Vivian Frazee, Audrey Warmuth, and Shana Smith for securing a grant from the City of San Jose to fund a Homework Center serving students twice a week from 3-5pm;
Guidance Counselors Malissa Goldstein and Charles Taylor for doing an exemplary job working with the Career Center for Guidance programs—it was so well received, that LHS must rent an outside facility;
Lynbrook's WASC action team leaders Eleanor Yang, Sarah Tiederman, Vivian Chien, Charlotte Kruk n'Kempen, Jennifer Turley, Audrey Warmuth and Ken Iams for helping Lynbrook move through meetings with not just certificated staff, but with parents, students and classified staff at least 7 times per year;
Library Technology Teacher Maria Jackson, who continues to set the standard to what that relatively new position can bring to students and staff alike;
The myriad of teachers who coach athletics and advise over 40 student clubs... to give just a few specific examples, the entire math department should be commended for having over 400 students show up on a Wednesday morning late start schedule to take the CAML math test. In addition, Amanda Day's Science Bowl students continue to experience exceptional success in competitions, and I'd also like to acknowledge Kumi Kobayashi's brilliant success with her Japan Bowl students;
And finally, the entire Lynbrook staff must be commended for having the resilience to continue to bounce back from so many personal tragedies, rising above these challenges in order to create a school that personifies excellence on so many levels." |

BOARD REPORT for Board of Trustees Meeting January 24, 2006
*******************************************************************
Regular Meeting of the Governing Board was held at Lynbrook High School,
1280 Johnson Avenue, San Jose, CA 95129
STUDY SESSION ON ENROLLMENT AND CAPACITY PROJECTIONS
The District has been working with consultants this past year to acquire comprehensive enrollment growth projections for the next several years. Per their reports, the projected enrollment for the 2006-07 school year shows an increase of 221 students districtwide and an additional 148 students for the 2007-08 school year. This gain of 349 students over the next two years is significantly below the 615 student increase the District has experienced the past two years but will not be evenly distributed among our existing high school attendance areas. Cupertino and Fremont High Schools are expected to show the greatest increase with each adding over 150 students by 2008 and potentially 700+ students in the next decade. The projections show Monta Vista High’s enrollment will decline after the 2006-07 school year, Homestead High will increase by 118 students in 2006 and remain stable thereafter, and Lynbrook High will remain the same in 2006 and then decline with much smaller enrollment than our other four high schools by 2009. The District is also monitoring the capacity of our high schools and the effect of additional students from new development within the Cities of Cupertino and Sunnyvale. (Staff is working closely with staff from both cities regarding the impact of new housing developments on District enrollment.) The Board of Trustees reviews enrollment and capacity figures yearly and will address this at a future Board meeting.
SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
Superintendent Dr. Steve Rowley announced that Bill Blattner has resigned from School Services. Blattner was a key advisor to basic aid districts regarding statewide legislative and budgetary actions. • Dr. Rowley introduced Linda Todd, a partner with Vavrinek, Trine, Day & Company, LLP, the District’s independent auditor. Todd reported that her audit firm made no adjustments to the District’s unaudited actuals and gave no recommendations for change. The Board of Trustees accepted the 2004-2005 Independent Audit. Board Members Nancy Newton and Barbara Nunes served on the audit committee this year; we are one of the few districts in the state with Board involvement on this committee.
LYNBROOK HIGH SCHOOL REPORT
Principal Mike White stated that he found the new format for the annual school report easier to work with than in the past and that the data is more exact and meaningful. For an overview of the Lynbrook High School Report, see District Bulletin. School Plans are online at www.fuhsd.org.
MID-YEAR UPDATE ON LONG RANGE PLAN
Summary of update will soon be online at www.fuhsd.org/lrp.htm
UPDATE ON CAHSEE RESULTS AND DISCUSSION OF
OPTIONS FOR NON-PASSERS IN THE CLASS OF 2006
As of January 24, 2006, 93% of the class of 2006 districtwide have passed the California High School Exit Exam, a requirement to receive a high school diploma. One hundred and fifty four (154) seniors have yet to pass. Of that number, 68 are students who are also behind in number of credits required to graduate in June. That leaves 86 seniors who are currently on track to meet all graduations requirements except passing the Exit Exam—37 of the 86 seniors are in special education and the state legislature is proposing to postpone the requirement to pass the exam for this year only for those students. That leaves 49 seniors still in jeopardy of not graduating of which 41 of them are English Learners. Each high school has specific, targeted interventions to help these students pass; their last chance to take the test before graduation is in March. The Board of Trustees and staff discussed concerns and options such as alternative certification for those seniors who will not have passed by June. In the next couple of months, staff will bring a matrix of policy options for Board action.
BOARD OF TRUSTEES...
- Awarded Contract Amendment 2, in the amount of $237,596, to Syserco, Inc., for the District Wide Energy Management System (EMS) Master Contract, including System Wide Components, programming, start up, service contract and warranty; and authorized staff to issue change orders, as necessary, pursuant to Public Contract Code 20118.4
- Authorized staff to file Notice of Completion for the Library and Auditorium Modernization Project at Monta Vista High School
- Reviewed the 2006 Board Calendar and scheduled a March 7th Study Session on the Modern Language Program. The Board also rescheduled the February 7th Board meeting with open session to begin at 7:30pm so they can attend a forum on the CAHSEE at the County Office of Education prior to the meeting.
