FEA President/CHS Social Science Teacher Tom Avvakumovits acknowledged the following teachers for their outstanding contributions to students’ success at Cupertino High School ...
"Tera Nova team of Greg Merrick, Jay Lawson, Gregg Buie, Debbie Headley and Chin Song (and his work with the Math and Learning Skills students). Chin has also done great things with the International Business class, bringing in a wide variety of excellent speakers and partnering with Japanese and ELD classes on projects.
Chris Moore, assisted by Kathleen Farrell, and Sean Cryan for their work on the Districtwide implementation of Plato—a computer program that can be customized for individual student needs. They are developing Plato units to help with CAHSEE preparation. This includes using each student’s subscores to create customized units for them that will be worked on in an afterschool workshop.
New band director, Sheldon Galdeira, for taking the CHS band to a higher level. I would be able to give you some more specifics on the awards and such, but every time I try to ask him questions, Sheldon is busy working with a group of young musicians—at all hours of the day.
Science teachers Allannah Ujifusa and Larry Demuth who have spent “gazillions” of hours, including weekends and evenings, to strengthen the chemistry curriculum.
Speech and Debate advisors Melissa Cooley and Kyle Fitzpatrick for inspiring dramatic growth and renewed success for the Speech and Debate team—winning several awards in numerous competitions this year.
Teachers Karen Fredericks, Jane Martin, Kristin Kempe and the aforementioned Chin Song for voluntarily starting the 'HW Clubs' after school where targeted students who have trouble completing assignments are encouraged to come and do homework in their classrooms.
Our urban high school leadership team of Laura Auch, Nuria Mora, Antonio Murillo, and assisted by Eric Ferrante, for embarking on what they call a PASS program. They have contacted all the freshman who have received either a D or an F and their parents, encouraging them to come to tutoring after school where academic tutors help these students achieve success.
Finally, in our athletic arena, basketball coach Craig Ellegood for leading his team to a fast start compiling a 15 and 2 record thus far, as they strive toward winning the league championship. They are also ranked #15 in the CCS by Calpreps.com, which is universally recognized as the pre-eminent ranking authority in the online world." |

BOARD REPORT for Board of Trustees Meeting January 10, 2006
*******************************************************************
SUPERINTENDENT’S REPORT
Superintendent Dr. Steve Rowley announced that at a Special Board Meeting held January 5, 2006, the Board of Trustees agreed to a $50,000 settlement with the IRS regarding the TRAN audit related to a 2001 Tax and Revenue Anticipation Note. • Dr. Rowley also stated that the police officer killed in East Palo Alto this past Saturday was Lynbrook High School Assistant Principal Tami McMillan’s brother, Rich May. Our thoughts and prayers are with Tami and her family during this most difficult time.
CUPERTINO HIGH SCHOOL REPORT
Under the guidance and direction of Associate Superintendent of Teaching and Learning Kate Jamentz, the District has made major changes in the school planning process this year. School Plans are a yearly requirement of all schools for both state and federal resources/grants and for the accreditation process. For this school year, the District has changed the timeline for writing school plans as they were previously done in May. Plans presented now through March tell the story of work in progress this school year. Beginning next fall, our School Plans will be presented to the Board at the end of October. The revamped School Plans have the same format, are now more data driven, with a common data set for each high school, tied to the goals of the District’s Long Range Plan, and linked to funds targeted to support them. Each high school’s Plan will have a set of measurable goals and a list of activities/tasks planned for the year with expected date of completion for each. For an overview of the Cupertino High School Report, see District Bulletin above. See Quick Links on bar at left for link to complete CHS School Plan.
UPDATE ON EFFORTS TO BUILD CHINESE LANGUAGE PROGRAM
Associate Superintendent Kate Jamentz stated that these efforts began last year when the District looked closely at over staffing in its modern language departments and made a commitment to look at ways to build the Chinese program. One step in this effort is to offer AP Chinese and AP Japanese courses next school year at the high schools that can support them. Another step in building this program is to provide families and students information regarding options for meeting modern language college admission requirements. The Teaching and Learning department is designing a brochure to promote the value of taking a modern language and to answer key questions regarding language requirements for college admission. This brochure will be distributed in the District, to Chinese schools in the community, and in our feeder districts. Jamentz has also been meeting monthly with Dr. Michael Chang and the principals of the Chinese Schools in the community. These talks will continue as they look at what courses need to be offered and develop a placement test to assess appropriate entry point for students. Jamentz also met with Superintendent Bill Bragg of the Cupertino Union School District to discuss interest in developing and implementing Chinese courses in CUSD middle schools.
DISCUSSION OF WALL STREET JOURNAL ARTICLE
Superintendent Dr. Steve Rowley began the discussion by apologizing for the hurt many in the community feel. After listening carefully as 21 students, parents, and community members voiced their concern about the Wall Street Journal article “The New White Flight” and its repercussions in the community, Vice-President of the Board Barbara Nunes read a statement summarizing the things that the Board discussed in relation to this article. See the Board of Trustees Response to Community above Quick Links on bar at left. Nunes then distributed a summary of ongoing efforts supporting diversity and multiculturalism in our district.
