Senior High School Students Attend De Anza College

What is College Advantage?
- An educational option to earn up to one year of college credits while completing high school graduation requirements.
- An opportunity to spend the fourth year of high school at De Anza College, taking college courses in science, English, mathematics, humanities and social science.
- An opportunity to complete a minimum of nine college courses that is especially helpful to students planning for advanced professional degrees.
- A choice to begin a certificate program, an associate degree and/or accrue transferable college credits for a four-year university.
- An option to participate in a college honors program.
- A chance to learn with students of varied ages and backgrounds.
- A potential cost savings for college expenses because of low community college costs for California residents.
Who is the College Advantage Student?
- An academically serious-minded high school senior.
- A student who seeks advanced subject studies by taking college courses in science, English, mathematics, humanities and social sciences.
- A student who feels he/she is ready to move on to college.
- A senior who is more interested in involvement in college activities than those offered at the high school level.
- A student who wants to take all of his/her senior year courses at De Anza College.
- A student who wants to earn college credit while completing high school.
- A student who wants to start completing a certificate program, an associate degree and/or accrue transferable college credits for a four-year university.
GENERAL ELIGIBILTY
- 3.5 or higher academic grade point average as recorded on the Fremont Union High School District's transcript
- On-target for graduation (180 units by the end of the eleventh grade)
- Completion of College Advantage application
- Two (2) high school teacher letters of recommendation

- 500-word essay: "Why I Want to Spend My Senior Year at De Anza College"
- Completion of De Anza English Placement Exam showing eligibility for English Writing 1A (EWRT 1A)
- A school record of responsible, mature, self-directed behavior
- Parent permission

GENERAL PROGRAM REQUIREMENTS
- Completion of high school requirements (Government, Economics, and English) as part of De Anza program and by the end of the winter quarter.
- Attendance at May, June and fall orientation sessions as scheduled.
- Adherence to high school and college codes of student conduct.
COLLEGE ADVANTAGE TIMELINE
FEBRUARY
High school juniors who meet the basic eligibility requirement of at least a
3.5 GPA will receive a mailer in early February, inviting them and their parents to
attend an information meeting to be held March 1st.
MARCH
Interested students and their parents are invited to an information night on
Thursday, March 1, 2007 from 7-8 pm in the Cupertino Room at the
Quinlan Center in Cupertino.
Application packets will be available at the information night and are due by March 22.
APRIL
Interviews will be held at De Anza College during the week of April 9-13, 2007.
Notification letters will be emailed to the students by April 18, 2007.
Parent & student orientation meeting will be held on April 19 at the Quinlan Center.
COSTS PER QUARTER
$34.50 for basic student fees
$26.65 for parking fees
$200- $250 for books
$1-$10 for miscellaneous lab fees
(subject to increase at any time)
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Q . Can I apply to a four-year university without penalty?
A . Yes. Your college admissions process will be the same as other high school seniors.
Q . Will I earn college and high school credits?
A . All courses will appear on your De Anza transcript for college credit.
However, only the courses that you need for high school graduation will appear
on your high school transcript.
Q . May I participate in high school graduation?
A . Yes. You may participate in graduation and all other senior activities.
Q . Can I continue in sports and other co-curricular activities?
A . It is strongly advised that you become involved with college activities rather than
high school activities. Participation, not leadership, at the high school level may be
possible and must be approved by your site administrator.
