Support AVID Seniors' College Dreams!

In response to a generous gift of matching funds donated by retired Board Member Nancy Newton, all four AVID programs are offering the scholarships below to support graduating seniors defray the costs of materials and books in their first year in college.   The target for each scholarship is to raise at least $250 from the community to be matched by Mrs. Newton’s gift for a $500 award.

If you would like to make a donation, small or large, follow these instructions.  Below are more details about each scholarship, including links to the applications.

We are no longer accepting donations for 2017 Scholarships.

With the generosity of dozens of community members, we raised over $6000 for AVID Scholarships!

We will be announcing the winning scholarship recipients by June 1.

Homestead High School

The AVID Senior Scholarship is awarded each year to two outstanding senior AVID students planning to attend a four-year university in the fall, in recognition of their hard work, academic success and perseverance in the program. Past award recipients have been role models for their classmates who exemplify everything the AVID program stands for: dedication, grit, resilience, leadership, passion, and determination.

Fremont High School

The Fujii Family Scholarship is offered by the family of Fremont High School AVID teacher and coordinator, Stephanie Fujii.  The Fujii family are enthusiastic supporters of the AVID program, and the AVID students, both in the AVID in the classroom and on the pathway to college. They are honored to have the opportunity to support such a powerful program.

The AVID Grit Award was created and sponsored by AVID District Director, Josh Maisel.  The purpose of this scholarship is to encourage AVID seniors to inspire younger AVID students to build their resilience and persistence in responding to challenges and setbacks. Students created short videos that shared their story of grit.  Younger AVID students will view the videos and select the most inspirational as the 2017 winner.

Both scholarship winners will be announced at the AVID Senior Celebration on May 18, 2017.

Monta Vista High School

The Monta Vista AVID Grit Award is awarded to an AVID senior who has shown ongoing individual determination and resilience throughout their high school career, demonstrated by their proactive approach of significant academic and personal challenges.  The Grit Award recipient embodies the spirit of the AVID program, has worked to establish strong, positive relationships with peers, teachers, and staff, and continually strives for personal growth.  The Grit Award honors the recipient's four-year commitment to the AVID program and intention to attend a four-year college or university upon graduation.

Scholarship winner will be announced at the Monta Vista Senior Award Ceremony on May 25, 2017.

“Over the last several years, I have had the honor of watching the many successes of the AVID students and the amazing dedication of their teachers and staff. I have attended the FHS student organized awards program to see firsthand their enthusiasm, support for one another, organizing skills, and the dedication and high expectations of their teachers. I have also become aware of the students successes after they move on to college. I am delighted to support their work in college with this scholarship and hope you will join me in contributing to the future of these very special students.”

- Nancy Newton, Board Member 1987-2016
