SPED 286 Fieldwork/Observation

Registration for SPED 286 is currently CLOSED.

We will begin registration once SPED 258 Session 1 is completed.

In order to apply for SPED 286, simply send a memo of interest via email to Joann Finley in HR.

Course Description

SPED 286 (Fieldwork) completes the third and final portion of the AAA requirement. The course consists of a brief observation by a University Supervisor to verify basic teaching competencies that are appropriate for students with Autism.

Course Information

Who Should Take This Course ~ All Mild/Moderate Special Education credential holders are eligible. California is moving forward with requiring that all Special Education teachers with ASD students have this authorization.  Moderate/Severe credentials currently include this authorization and Mild/Moderate credentials in the future will include this, but current Mild/Moderate Credentials do not include it. Prerequisites: SPED258 and SPED 259.

Earning Your Full AAA ~ SPED 286 is the third part of a three part program designed to satisfy the requirements for adding an autism authorization to your existing Mild/Moderate Special Education Credential:
  • SPED 258 
  • SPED 259 - Satisfied via Project Optimal (first four modules). SPED 258 and Project Optimal may be completed in any order.
  • FIELDWORK (SPED 286) - Satisfiied through observation (by an authorized individual) of your application of teaching strategies learned.
 
How To Apply ~ Send official Memo of Interest via email to Joann Finley in Human Resources at FUHSD. Once all emails have been received and observations arranged, you will receive information regarding your observation dates and any further next steps.
 

Cost ~ 

  • $250 for tuition
  • Optional: 1 unit will be available for an Additional fee ($110) through the San Joaquin COE.
  • Upon issuance of the Autism Added authorization by the CCTC, FUHSD employees will be eligible for a one time additional competency stipend. ($1390)

SPED 258, SPED 259, and the Field Work requirement are the three courses that San Joaquin County Office of Education will accept for the AAA. FUHSD and three of our neighboring districts have partnered with SJCOE to create this path toward AAA issuance. There are other avenues to obtain the AAA that you may choose to pursue on your own.
